This is a reminder that the applications for the Teamsters Canada Member Scholarship are due October 31, 2019.

This scholarship was specifically created for eligible members who wish to continue their education in their current field or expand into a different industry. The scholarships are meant to help our members afford tuition for post-secondary institutions and certificate programs.

Laval, QC, May 17, 2019 – Jim Hoffa, General President of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, and François Laporte, President of Teamsters Canada, made the following statements today on the lifting of the U.S. steel and aluminum tariffs:

In Washington, Hoffa was quick to offer his support for the announced solution: "When this overdue announcement was made, I personally thanked Ambassador Lighthizer and congratulated him for the successful resolution of this irritant in our traditionally excellent bilateral trade relations."

Teamsters are calling for dairy workers to be compensated in the upcoming federal budget for losses from recent trade agreements. The union represents 5,000 dairy workers in Canada in the dairy processing sector and in bulk milk and dairy product transportation. 

“If a government finds it is necessary to compensate an industry for harm caused by a trade deal, then they should also explicitly compensate workers,” explained François Laporte, President of Teamsters Canada. “Compensating businesses will not help workers lose their jobs. The benefits do not trickle down.”

The Teamsters Union celebrates Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day.  Every year, we commemorate Women’s History Month in March, and March 8 marks International Women’s Day. The theme of International Women’s Day for 2019 is “Balance for Better”.

The Teamsters Union, established in 1903, was originally formed by the merger of two rival Unions that represented workers who drove teams of horses, which was how most freight was delivered at that time. This new Union quickly spread across North America. 

This led to the formation of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters and Chauffeurs, Stable Men and Helpers Local No. 464 Milk Drivers and Dairy Employees Union in 1919, chartered on February 17th.

We’re not sure how long after, but thankfully it was shortened to Teamsters Local Union No. 464 sometime later.
