Congratulations to long-serving Local 464 member, Dean Grant, on his performance at the 2014 BC Professional Truck Driving Championships.

Dean, who works at Agrifoods International Cooperative Limited (AICL) as a bulk-milk tanker driver, secured his 3rd title as Grand Champion at the BC Championships.  In addition to the title of grand champion, Dean placed 1st in the Straight Truck class and also won the Team Trophy (along with Evan Hirst, Dale Scott, Rob Balan and Jose Lecinana).

It is with the deepest regret that we must inform you that Brother Robert (Bobby) J. Kornhass, Secretary-Treasurer of Local 464, died at his home on Friday, July 11th.

Bobby’s death was sudden and caught everyone by surprise and we are all deeply saddened by his passing.

The James R. Hoffa Memorial Scholarship Fund has announced the topic for this year’s Essay Contest.  The topic will be:  The vast majority of union members make more than the minimum wage.  Why should Teamsters care what the minimum wage is?

Applications and Essays are due to the Fund no later than September 30, 2014.  

This year, 200 essays will be selected to be awarded one-time $1,000 scholarships.

We think readers and, particularly, Ontario teachers, would be interested to learn what the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan has been up to lately. In a word, union-busting.

The pension plan, which is funded by contributions by and on behalf of Ontario’s unionized teachers, is waging a ruthless, vindictive campaign of harassment, intimidation and threats against U.S. workers of a company it owns: Exal.

In 2010, teachers acquired a controlling stake in Exal, an Ohio firm that makes aluminum bottles and cans and named three directors to its board to actively manage its investment.

WHAT ARE RIGHT-TO-WORK LAWS?

They are...

• Takes away your weekends, free time, vacations
• Offers low quality minimum wage jobs
• Reduces social benefits
• Takes away fair working conditions
• Undermines trade unions

1958 telegram from Jimmy Hoffa discovered James R. "Jimmy" Hoffa, who would turn 100 on Feb. 14, was a hardworking, hands-on leader who would pick up the phone and intervene personally on behalf of someone who had a problem.

A just-discovered telegram from 1958 shows just how far Hoffa would go to help someone. Hoffa sent a Western Union telegram in effort to find a 7-year-old New Jersey boy who ran away from home.
